Goodman Eye Medical and Surgical Center is proud to offer the STAAR Toric IOL lens as a lens implant option for cataract patients. If you suffer from astigmatism this may be the lens for you!
What is the STAAR Toric IOL lens?
Toric IOL’s are lens implants designed to correct a cataract patient’s astigmatism. In most cases, astigmatisms can lead to impaired or blurry vision if it is moderate to severe. The blurring of the vision is a result of the eyes irregularly shaped cornea. The cornea and the lens of a normal eye have a circular shape. The cornea and lens of an eye with astigmatism is an oval shape.
Before the Toric IOL lens technology was introduced, surgeons would try to change the shape of the cornea through a small incision during cataract surgery. Now, with the introduction of the Toric IOL lens, a cataract patient's vision can be improved with a simple lens implant and without the need for extensive surgery.
Am I a candidate?
Cataract patients who have a pre-existing astigmatism may find that a Toric IOL lens implant has the potential to eliminate the need for glasses after surgery. This is because the Toric IOL lens has the ability to replace the natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery, and provide a vision correction option for their astigmatism. The Toric IOL helps refocus vision, and is designed with the same technology as a contact lens.
If you are a cataract patient previously diagnosed with astigmatism, the Toric IOL lens implant may be an option for you! Please contact Dr. Goodman to discuss your candidacy!
